FAQ
1. Will my student need to do work at home, or would it all be done at The Anchor for the majority of the time?
Majority of student work will be done at the facility if the student is at the center at least 4 hours a day. Students not attending the center daily can complete work at home in the same amount of time.
2. Will my student have to teach his/herself the material and just be guided? Or could the learning coach take the time to teach my student things he/she doesn’t understand.
Excellent question. This is the EXACT purpose of a learning coach, and this is what you’re Anchor monthly tuition goes to with the learning coach services. Students work at their own pace, and when they hit a roadblock, they request guidance. OR if together the learning coach and student establish a routine, the learning coach may say... okay let's introduce the lesson together, then you work on your own once you've grasped the concept. I Do, We Do, You Do... kind of thing. Every student is different.
If you were to enroll in any online self paced program, the student would do most of the work independently (or with a parent). Our center's purpose is to take that weight off of the students and parents.
3. Will my child be able to receive accommodations he/she receives now with a 504 plan? The main one I am concerned about is tests read aloud and extended time on tests.
Absolutely. All accommodations will be given. Upon enrollment, we can work together to gather the necessary paperwork.
4. Would my student have to take state testing?
This is dependent on the curriculum/online program you choose for your student. Public schooling online options are government funded, so state testing is required. A state approved homeschool program does not require state testing.
5. Will my student be allowed time to interact with other kids/make friends? My child is very social, so that is my only concern with making the switch to this environment.
100% yes! We will have recess time and breaks built into our schedules. As enrollment increases, clubs will also be added. Students enrolled as homeschooled with the state always have the option of participating in parish extracurricular activities and sports. In accordance with ACT 715; A public school shall not disqualify a student from participating in extracurricular activities or interscholastic athletics solely because the student is enrolled in an approved home study program, so long as the student lives in the attendance zone of the public school.
6. Would it be possible to do 4 day weeks and have all of the work completed for the week, or would it kind of depend on how my child works?
Depending on the student’s pace, I would say four 7 hour days would be a sufficient amount of time to complete a week of work.
7. What time would drop off and pick up be?
Before and aftercare will be available if there is enough interest, but operating hours will be 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Drop off - 7:30-8:00AM; pickup - 3:00-3:30PM.
8. Can I enroll my child with the state as a homeschooler and have them attend your center for assistance?
Absolutely! Our center provides learning coach services for students enrolled in nontraditional school settings during the day. For more information regarding the decision to homeschool, please visit the LDOE Website by clicking HERE.
9. Does The Anchor accept the Gator Grant funds?
Yes! The Anchor is an approved vendor for the LA Gator Grant! Funds can be used to pay for learning coach services provided by our center.
